Why I Have a Blog

This is a question I have heard from my wife before and as the new year approaches, (goal setting/resetting, reflections, etc) I thought I would try put it down in words.

As you probably know, I have 2 blogs.  One for personal and one for business.  Some history on why I started this is due to my brother Terry.  He and I have a lot in common, especially the love of cool, techie stuff.  He told me about blogs a while back and next thing you know, I'm reading a few, then setting up Bloglines and bang (!), I'm in.

The personal blog is a natural way to have a place to communicate with family and friends all over the place.  The business blog is more than that.

A few reasons for business thoughts (in no particular order or reference to "real or perceived" benefit):

  • allows my "voice" to be heard around the world
  • fosters communication with people I never would have the chance to meet
  • is therapeutic
  • makes me "see" outside of my comfort zone on issues that impact my life
  • opens my eyes to opportunities and issues I haven't faced
  • makes me a better manager to my staff
  • keeps me sharp
  • allows me to possibly help others outside of my personal network

OK, so how about you?  Do you have your own blog?  Why?  Leave me a comment on your thoughts.

Hmm... good question. I don't think we ask "Why do I...?" questions enough.

I began my blog as an easy way to learn CSS code and page layout. I was new to design and I knew that my employer would soon want our site to be redesigned so I thought it best to learn a few things before that process started.

As it stands, i've been blogging almost everyday for about 11 months, with no sign of slowing down. (And as for the initial reason, i've learned enough CSS that the site gets a visual overhaul about every two-three weeks.)

It's become a sort of mesh of everything i'm passionate about... thoughts on my church, on the church, my life, design news, pop culture, assorted tidbits of personal info... there's really no clear demarkation for what the reader will get on any given day.

I suppose I blog because it's a natural extension of my workflow everyday, being on the computer, being online... it's a nice way to have a public voice (albeit sometimes more public than i'd like) and to meet a few nice people along the way.

Shua!

I like your redesign! What a suprise to see it after checking out your blog a week or so ago.

A very creative way to list your links!

Thank you for reading my posts and keep up the great work.

Today, I became a blogger. Maybe more accurately put...a blogger visitor. I'll most likely not create my own blog. But I will take time to visit the blogs that others have created and nurtured for us to enjoy. It's a virtual trip to the brainoritum.

Charlene, I am surprised that you did not also mention blogs here both as a way for a professional to market themselves and a way to improve their ranking in the search results. And why not add your blog to your Ziggs profile.
