Stopped for some gas after a client lunch today and ran inside the TETCO to use the facilities.
Walked into a disaster of a bathroom. You know what I mean...paper all over a wet floor; unflushed toilet, etc. Just gross.
Well, I really needed to use the restroom, so while I'm "standing there", there is a picture frame directly over the toilet that reads the following:
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide our customers an
outstanding buying experience
by providing quality service in a
clean and pleasant atmosphere.
By working as a motivated team,
we shall attain our goal of providing
the best customer experience
in the state.
I don't know what is more funny...this being displayed above the toilet in the Men's Room, or the irony of the moment.
I told the attendant that they needed to clean the restroom and I got a nod and a "sure, I'll get right to that; in about 5 hours" look (wasn't the picture of a "motivated team" I envisioned...).
Sorry for the bathroom "humor", but I really don't think this is what they had in mind when they wrote this mission statement.

The only thing worse than bad mission statements is decent mission statements that have ABSOLUTELY NO BEARING OR RESEMBLANCE TO THE COMPANY. I'm sure this MS sounded great when someone rattled it off in a board room... it's a shame so few companies know how to follow through on what they claim to be the ehart of their organization.

Amen.
I don't know if I've been in another TETCO to have a comparison to this one, but if you go to their website, its obvious that they believe Customer Service is a way they can win.

Truth is stranger than fiction.
Now a company like Quick Trip? They deliver on every one of the promises that TETCO is making. And QT does it with a smile. I'm amazed that I will go OUT OF MY WAY and PAY MORE FOR GAS to go to a QT because I know that it will be clean (especially the bathrooms) and that the people behind the counter will be courteous.

Sounds like Quick Trip is executing, while TETCO is still working away in "strategy land".
If you have a strategy, you have to have tactics in place in order to execute the strategy.
I went to www.quiktrip.com to get a quick "flavor" of the company and it seems like they are pushing 2 themes:
- guaranteed gasoline
- we love our employees!
I guess a happy employee would of and does clean up a bathroom.
I still wonder something...did corporate tell the TETCO station where to put the Mission Statement picture frame, or was that an unhappy employee doing it as a joke?
