Tim is a "can do" kind of guy. I first "met" Tim after listening to his Podcast Brothers podcast. You may remember him as a guest blogger for the Business Thoughts' Future of Podcasting feature. He has his hands in a number of ventures and most recently, the Podcast and Portable Media Expo.
Tim asked me to be a speaker at his expo in November, which I am honored (there will be more on this soon!).
Here's the interview of Tim:
Business Thoughts: You are working on a number of projects: multiple podcasts, setting up an expo and more. Tell us about what you are working on.
Tim Bourquin: In 2003 I sold a trade show company I started back in 1999. I finished the consulting agreement on December 31, 2004 and started a new company on January 1, 2005. I want to build a portfolio of trade shows and websites over the next few years so the plan is to launch two events and two websites per year. For 2005, the trade shows are Podcast & Portable Media Expo and Forex Trading Expo and the websites are EnduranceRadio.com and SmallBusinessExpo.com.
BT: How did you get into podcasting?
TB: I've been involved in streaming audio for several years now. I've used it heavily to promote trade shows I've organized in the past and I was using streaming audio for the interviews on EnduranceRadio.com. I heard about podcasting on a message board somewhere back in October. I already had an RSS feed for EnduranceRadio.com that I was using to notify my subscribers that a new audio interview had been posted on the website - but of course they had to go to the site to download or stream it. To start podcasting, I simply added the enclosure tags to my RSS feed and it was done.
BT: What gets you out bed in the morning? What really gets you excited about the day?
TB: As a trade show producer, I love working hard and seeing an event come together. In the event business, you work incredibly hard for 9 months to a year, have the 3 or 4 day event, breathe for a few weeks, and then start all over again. My passion is working on streaming audio and trade shows so the Podcast Expo is really exciting to develop and mold.
BT: Tell us more about the Podcast and Portable Media Expo.
TB: When I first started recording telephone interviews with my conference speakers back in 2001, there was very little information out there about how to get decent audio quality. When podcasting came along, people from all around were asking a lot of those same questions. Now that podcasting is growing quickly, people need a place to learn how to use recording equipment, what equipment they need, how to edit their audio, how to produce regular shows and how to make money with their "homemade" content. Podcast and Portable Media Expo will offer everyone the chance to learn and talk to their fellow podcasters. The exhibit hall will be a place you can try out all the tools and toys and see what's available.
BT: What is your "day job"?
TB: My day job is launching the company that started on January 1st. Thankfully I did well enough on the sale of my business that I didn't have to go looking for a job when the consulting agreement ended.
BT: If you had an entire weekend with no commitments (total free schedule); what would you do?
TB: Take my wife and daughter and our WaveRunners down to San Diego and ride around Mission Bay all day. Get up late on Sunday morning and read the New York Times and Orange County Register from beginning to end with a giant mug of hot coffee.
