This Sunday (7/10/2005) was the first annual Disco Sprint Triathlon at Lake Grapevine. Tom Ryan, founder of Dallas Athletes put on the race and had a very successful first year. This was race #2 of the Texas vs. Louisiana Border Battle Triathlon Series.
The event was sold out with 500 participants. As the name suggests, the theme was Disco. Tom kept it fun with disco music and there were plenty of volunteers and racers wearing their best polyester.
The distances included at 500 yard open water swim; a 19 mile, 2 loop bike course and a 5k run.
This was the first time a race had been held at Lake Grapevine and I really enjoyed the course. Lake Grapevine is where we train for open water swims during the summer, but for non-Dallas Athletes, it was completely new.
The bike course had some hills and during my training ride of the course on Saturday morning, I thought it was going to be tight due to some of the turns and narrow roads, but the bike traffic seemed to move well during the race.
The run included some shaded trail runs that the Grapevine Runners and Walkers club know well, as it was right in their backyard.
Probably my two favorite things about the race was the "hangout" factor after the race and the great volunteers. The amount of space available due to the set up allowed for a lot of spectators and athletes plenty of room to mingle, check out sponsor booths and see the end of the run.
The volunteers did a great job of keeping the triathletes safe and well hydrated with the run water stops.
All in all, a great 1st year effort and a very good location for future races!
As far as my performance; I was pleased. I finished #12 in my age group and just missed the Top 10 by 21 seconds (I'm still hacked about that...). I finished 55th overall with a time of 1 hour, 26 minutes and 10 seconds.
